Chapter Twelve

Spending a few nights in the city would have never bothered him before. He would have simply hit a few bars and, most likely, found someone willing to share his time and his bed with.

Now, however, he found his time droning on and ended up falling asleep watching an old movie in his hotel room on Valentine’s night.

He knew that Robin had a large high school dance to tend to, which got him thinking about his own school dances. They had never been hosted at a place as elegant as the barn and had instead been held in the high school gym. Dancing next to your school sweetheart with a hint of sweaty socks and jocks in the air just had never been something he’d looked forward to.

He bet that he would have looked forward to dancing under the strings of lights in the romantic atmosphere he knew Robin and Kara arranged for each dance.

The sisters had a knack for turning something common into something… extraordinary. Just like she’d taken their casual relationship and turned it into something deeper. He hadn’t expected to feel as much for her as he did.

He supposed it was because they’d known one another casually all of their lives. Then again, he’d never really paid any attention to the sisters before, so he couldn’t explain why it mattered now.

She mattered.

The drive back to Pride a few days later was mundane and tedious. He was thoroughly excited to get out of the city and wondered why he’d been thrilled to return to the craziness of the hustle and bustle.

He’d run into a few of his exes the night after Valentine’s Day when he’d bumped into a friend who had strong-armed him into heading to a bar and having a few drinks.

It hadn’t been hard to turn down his exes’ advances, which had gotten him thinking and brooding so much that he’d been a downer and had left less than an hour after he’d arrived.

He continued to think about his and Robin’s relationship as he grew closer to Pride. How had she gotten under his skin so quickly? Part of his mind played the possibility that this had been her plan all along.

Had she trapped him? Trapped him into giving up everything he’d wanted in the city, to leave it all behind and tie himself down to small-town life. A life where, he knew all too well, he could be limited in every aspect.

Especially his career. Sure, he owned his own law practice. If you could call it that. He had more than a handful of new clients already, each of them needing small things like their wills updated or small disputes handled. Not that he didn’t like the work or the people of Pride. Those, along with enjoying his time with Robin, were his only saving grace.

What did that say about him? Was he becoming too attached to her?

Moving into his own place had afforded him privacy, but he’d filled his free time with Robin, or he did when she was available herself.
